ON THE ROAD OF RESPONSIBILITY

Every day, I board a public bus teeming with people. On my way out, I’m among roughly 80 commuters, while my return trip places me in a smaller vehicle with about 45. Sometimes, the journey is enlivened by interactions, debates, or moments of collective worship. Other times, I find myself silently pleading for the driver to speed up so I can alight quickly. If it’s not a misunderstanding escalating into a heated argument, it’s the discomfort of a neighbor whose sweet appearance is betrayed by a stifling odor—be it from their breath or body. I've come to realize that being "breath-taking" can sometimes mean quite the opposite.

In this bus, I’ve witnessed all sorts of drama. People leaving their cozy beds, hopeful for a better day, only to find themselves in fistfights. One morning, a young man slapped an elderly woman over her sharp words, and the uproar lasted until I reached my destination. Incidents like this is what I encounter everyday, but what’s been occupying my thoughts lately is the role of the driver.

I’ve taken moments to observe these drivers and how crucial they are. While some passengers are engrossed in conversations, glued to their phones, or deep in prayer, I set those aside to observe, introspect, and relax. It struck me that despite our differences, we all share one thing: trust. We trust the driver to apply caution and ensure our safety. We trust that they won’t make fatal errors. Without needing to supervise their every move, we entrust them with our lives while we engage in activities that may or may not matter.

The driver, fully aware of this trust, embraces his role with unwavering focus. No matter the heated arguments, fistfights, or riveting debates behind him, he stays composed. He doesn’t turn around or interject his opinion, even when clearly tempted. Sometimes, I catch him smiling, undoubtedly intrigued by the ongoing discussion, yet he restrains himself. He knows the cost of indulgence—our safety.

This level of discipline often goes unappreciated. People berate him for minor oversights, like stopping just a step beyond their preferred spot. Yet, he remains unfazed.

Now, how does this resonate with our individual lives? Isn’t it striking to realize that we are the drivers of our own journeys? The pressing question then becomes: "Who are the passengers in my life? What have they entrusted to me? What am I accountable for?"

In life, we are entrusted with many things—our goals, responsibilities, relationships, and personal growth. Like the driver, we carry the weight of trust from those who depend on us, whether they’re family, friends, colleagues, or even our future selves. Each of these passengers brings their own expectations, challenges, and influence into our journey.

The critical question is: "Are we staying focused on the road ahead?"

It's easy to get distracted by the noise around us—arguments, fleeting pleasures, or the need to prove a point. But just as the driver’s primary role is to ensure a safe and smooth journey, our role is to remain steadfast in our purpose. We must resist the urge to react impulsively to external distractions, no matter how tempting or provocative they may be.

Like the driver, we’re accountable for our decisions and their consequences. Even minor lapses in judgment can impact not only us but everyone depending on us. This demands self-awareness, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to our path, even when the road gets tough or when we feel the pressure to veer off course.

Ultimately, the journey isn’t just about reaching the destination; it’s about how we navigate the ride. Are we thoughtful, intentional, and focused? Or are we letting distractions and external forces dictate our actions? Each day, we’re given the opportunity to steer our lives with care, mindful of the trust placed in us and the responsibility we bear.
